School Newsletter April/May

Welcome:  We are delighted to welcome Anna Bobyr who has travelled from Ukraine to our school.  Anna joined 2nd class during the month of March and has settled in so quickly with all her classmates.

Staffing:  The DES issued the staffing schedule for the 2022/23 school year in early April.  We now meet the threshold for 8 mainstream class teachers.  This will come into effect at the start of the next school year meaning we will have all single stream classes.

Mr. Kinsella will be participating in a temporary reassignment of his post during the next academic year.  Mr. Kinsella will take up a position in St. Louis Senior Primary School in Dublin and Ms. Hazel Ivers from that school will move to Rathnure NS for the year.  We wish Darragh all the very best with this exciting venture.  Mr. Wright will be extending his career break for another year and we look forward to regular updates on his travels!

Homework Survey: Over the last year, we have piloted a new approach to homework.  This involved setting homework on a weekly basis using the Seesaw app.  The amount of written homework was reduced to just two pieces of written work per week with reading and tables every night.  In an effort to inform our planning going forward, we will be surveying all parents and teachers over the next few weeks and would appreciate it if you could take the time to complete a short survey that will be sent to you on Aladdin.

Staff Training: The school will close at 12 midday on Friday 27th May to facilitate staff in-service training on the new Primary Language Curriculum.  Buses will run as normal at this time.

School Tours: School tours will take place during the week of 6th June, more details will follow later from class teachers.

Morning drop off times:  Please note that pupils are not permitted on the school premises until after 9am in the morning.  I would appreciate if you could communicate this message to whoever drops your child to school on a daily basis.

Rackard League: Well done to all the pupils who have been taking part in the after school camogie and hurling training.  The Rackard League is now underway and we wish both the girls and boys teams all the very best.  A big thank you to all the staff and parents who have given so generously of their time over the last number of months.

Pencil Upcycling Fundraiser: Well done to Lilly Kehoe, Kate Higgins, Izzy Barron and Síona Martin who have worked very hard over the last number of weeks to raise money for Ukraine.  They came up with the idea to upcycle used pencils for a small fee.  All the monies raised will be donated to The Irish Red Cross.  The girls have raised an impressive €151 euros! Well done girls!!

First Holy Communion:  Pupils in 2nd Class are busy preparing for their First Holy Communion which will take place on Saturday 21st May.  The ceremonies will take place at 10am in Rathnure Church and 12pm in Templeudigan Church.  We wish all the pupils and their families a happy and peaceful day.

School Committees

Wellbeing Committee

The Wellbeing Committee have worked so hard over the past few weeks planning our Mental Health Awareness Day which was held on 29th April.  We had lots of lovely activities in school such as Whole School Guided Meditation outside in the sunshine, Yoga, Friendship lessons, Secret Kindness and Jars of Happiness.  We also held a ’Pyjama Day’ fundraiser that day to raise money for Pieta House.  Thanks to your donations we collected a fantastic €740 on the day.  Thanks to everyone on the Wellbeing Committee for all your hard work.

Active School Committee

The Active School Committee are working hard at the moment planning Active Week which will take place 13th-17th June.  We have lots of exciting ideas in the pipeline trying out some new sports that we never had in school before, so we are really looking forward to that!  Our 5-a-side Soccer League has started with teams made up of pupils from 3rd-6th class.  Matches are played at break time with older pupils acting as referees for each game.  Well done to all involved.

Green Schools Committee:

Thank you to horticulturist, Fergal Joy, from Glanbia, Bunclody, who came to school to show the Green Schools committee how to sow hanging baskets and pots so that we can keep our school looking nice and provide lots of food for the bees. We look forward to looking after them for the Summer term.

Rath an Iúir ag Glanadh:

Well done to everyone who participated in Rath an Iúir ag Glanadh over the Bank Holiday weekend. We collected 40 bags of rubbish from the local areas and saw lots of great activity on twitter of everyone’s hard work. Thank you to the Green Schools committee for their work in organising the clean-up and the Rathnure, Templeudigan and Killanne hall committees for the use of their facilities as collection points for collection by Wexford County Council.

Incredible Edibles:

Our school are taking part in the Incredible Edibles program in conjunction with Agri Aware. We have been provided with seeds and plants to sow fruit and vegetables and classes across the school have been working hard on looking after them. Thank you to Seanie Murphy and Jim Blackburn for putting the polytunnel back up over the Easter break so that we could transplant them outside. We will be submitting a log book of our work before the end of May as part of the program.

Save the Bees:

Well done to everyone who participated in the Save the Bees by collecting the stamps from Supervalu. We have a full chart now to send off and hopefully we will be in with the chance to win some prizes for our school!

Parents Association Easter Draw:  We had a great response to our Clothes collection which was held at the end of March.  A total of €526 was raised.  A donation of €200 will be made to Irish Red Cross.
