Rathnure NATIONAL sCHOOL sEPTEMBER/oCTOBER 2024 nEWSLETTER

General Information:

  • Fáilte ar Ais- A big welcome back to all of our pupils, staff and parents.  As we begin the new term, we look forward to a great year ahead, working together for the good of the pupils and our school. A special welcome to our 24 new Junior Infants.  We wish them many happy years with us.
  • School JumpersPlease ensure that your child’s name is clearly printed on their uniform and tracksuit jumpers.
  • Carpark Safety-Please continue to take care in the carpark at drop off and collection times. Please remember not to drive in or park where the buses park near the entrance at the Arena to ensure the children’s safety. We would ask that pupils are not dropped to school until after 9am in the morning.  Pupils are welcome to enter the school premises after this time when supervision is in place.
  • Aladdin Connect/School Payments-We would like to thank all parents for their co-operation with Aladdin Connect.  Payments for Art & Craft/Photocopying and swimming lessons can still be made through the app.
  • Shining Lights Awards-We will continue to give Shining Light awards this year. These awards will be given to pupils who stand out in terms of the respect, kindness, manners, forgiveness, support, effort etc. that they show to others. These awards can be given by any staff to any pupil across the school.
  • Parent and Toddler Group- We are delighted to welcome back the Parent and Toddler Group to the school again this year.  They meet every Friday morning from 9:30am-10:50am.  Please spread the word to anyone you know that might be interested.  This is a fun filled social occasion for parents and toddlers alike!
  • Hurling Grips- are available to purchase from the school office.  €2 each, limited supply.  Cash only.

School Policies:

  •  We operate a Healthy Eating Policy at Rathnure NS. One small, nut-free treat is permitted for lunch on Fridays.

School Committees:

Student Council- Thank you to all students who took part in our election process this year. The standard of applications was very high and the future for our school looks very bright! Our committee members for this year are: 3rd class: Aoife and Lilly 4th class: Niamh and Padhraic 5th class: Grace and Sadie 6th class: Molly and Kaitlyn. The committee is very enthusiastic about starting some new projects this year.

Green Schools- A special welcome to our new committee members this year. The Green Schools team have been very busy while the sun was shining cleaning the polytonal and planting flower pots for the front of our school. A word of thanks also goes to Ms. Banville for her contribution.

Our tidy classroom winners over the past two weeks were 3rd class in the Senior end and 1st class in the Junior end. Well done everyone for keeping your own space and room clean and tidy.

Wellbeing Committee- The last Wednesday of every month we celebrate Wellbeing Wednesday. The wellbeing theme for September and October is ‘Connect’. With this in mind, the Wellbeing Committee suggested that buddy classes meet up for an activity. Junior Infants had fun doing jigsaws with 3rd Class, 4th Class taught Senior Infants to play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Tag, 1st and 5th Classes enjoyed playing with Lego, and 2nd and 6th Classes played a Kahoot Quiz together. It was very enjoyable and lots of connections were made. We are looking forward to meeting up with our buddies again in October for more fun.

Hope Shoebox AppealWe are delighted to be taking part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal again this year. The Christmas Shoebox appeal is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty in less developed countries. Leaflets will be distributed to the oldest member of each family in the coming days. If you are in the position to make a Christmas Shoebox, it would be greatly appreciated. Please ensure that the Christmas Shoebox is returned to the school by Friday 25th October.

Sport:

Gaelic Football-We have started our Fun Junior and Senior Leagues in school for all pupils interested in playing Gaelic Football from 1st to 6th class. Matches will be played at lunchtimes.  Best of luck to all involved!

Mini 7’s Football:

We have started training for Mini 7’s Football on Wednesdays after school.  The boys will play their first match tomorrow here in Rathnure and the girls will play their first match on Thursday in Cushinstown NS. We wish the both teams the best of luck in their first competitive football match.

Curriculum Information:

  • Swimming- Pupils from 1st-6th class are attending swimming lessons again this year in the Apex New Ross.  The swimming lessons themselves represent very good value for money and we are very grateful to the fundraising efforts of the PA as they are covering the bulk of the cost of the buses which has increased again this year.
