September/October 2022

General Information:

  • Welcome- A big welcome back to school to all of our pupils, staff and parents.  A special welcome to our 19 new Junior Infants. We are enjoying getting to know you all!  We are delighted to welcome Lucia and Szczepan Siatka who joined 4th Class.  We would also like to welcome Ms. Michelle Doyle, Ms. Hazel Ivers and Ms. Róisín Murphy to our teaching staff along with Ms. Róisín Kehoe, student teacher, who has joined 6th class for 5 weeks in September and October.  She will be observing and teaching some lessons throughout the block.
  • School population- This year we have 201 pupils, admin principal, 8 class teachers, 2 SEN teachers, 3 SNAs, caretaker, secretary and two cleaners.
  • School JumpersPlease ensure that your child’s name is clearly printed on their uniform and tracksuit jumpers.
  • Carpark Safety-Please continue to take care in the carpark at drop off and collection times. Please remember not to drive in or park where the buses park near the gate of the school to ensure the children’s safety. We would ask that pupils are not dropped to school until after 9am in the morning.  Pupils are welcome to enter the school premises after this time.
  • Aladdin Connect/School Payments-We would like to thank all parents for their co-operation with Aladdin Connect.  Payments for school books, swimming lessons and optional insurance can still be made on the app.
  • Shining Lights Awards-We will continue to give Shining Light awards this year. These awards will be given to pupils who stand out in terms of the respect, kindness, manners, forgiveness, support etc. that they show to others. These awards can be given by any staff to any pupil across the school.
  • Parent and Toddler Group- We are delighted to welcome back the Parent and Toddler Group to the school.  They meet every Friday morning from 9:30am-11:15am.  Please spread the word to anyone you know that might be interested.  This is a fun filled social occasion for parents and toddlers alike!

School Policies:

  • School Lunches-A reminder that all school lunch rubbish must be brought home by all pupils.  This is important as parents will then know exactly what their children are eating while at school. If your child does not like something that they are getting for their lunch, please change their menu on the Fresh Today Website.  Please note that 5pm Thursday is the cut off for any change to Fresh Today lunch orders for the following week.  Also, if you are aware that your child will be absent for a particular day or week please cancel the lunch accordingly. We operate a Healthy Eating Policy at Rathnure NS. One small, nut-free treat is permitted for lunch on Fridays.

School Committees:

  • Green Schools- The Green Schools committee are delighted to welcome Jack Quigley and Odhrán Morrissey to the committee as 3rd class representatives. We are looking forward to getting everyone in the school community involved in lots of initiatives this year as we work towards our Green Flag for Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste.
  • We have reduced our landfill waste in the school by 28% over the month of September compared to the month of September last year! Well done to all the pupils for their hard work. Keep up the good work everyone!
  • We really enjoyed getting involved with #WalktoSchool22 during September and completing a lap of the walking track on our route to school. For the month of October, we will be getting involved with International Walk to School month by having a Walk on Wednesday each Wednesday of the month.

Curriculum Information:

  • Sing Out Loud- Pupils from 4th-6th class will be taking part in the Sing Out Loud concert in the National Opera House Wexford.  Over 3000 pupils will take part over two weeks and we are very excited that our pupils will get the opportunity to perform at such an event!  More details regarding the date of our performance along with consents and ticket information have been sent out on Aladdin.
  • Gaeilge-We have begun a two-year plan for our school for Content and Language Integrated learning where we will be working on learning different subjects through Gaeilge for some lessons each term. This term we will be working on Music. Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam!
  • Literacy Lift Off -is currently taking place in 1st class.  Pupils are working really hard on reading, phonics and spelling every week.  We will move to Senior Infants after Halloween.  Literacy Hour also takes place in 2nd & 3rd Class every week.  Well done to all pupils.
  • Swimming- Pupils from 1st-6th class will attend swimming lessons again this year in the Apex New Ross.  The swimming lessons themselves represent very good value for money and we are very grateful to the fundraising efforts of the PA as they are covering the bulk of the cost of the buses which has increased significantly this year.

Parents Association:

  • AGM- The AGM of the Parents Association will take place on Monday 10th October at 7pm in the school hall.
  • Clothes Collection Fundraiser–The PA are organising a clothes collection to raise money towards the rising costs of bus transfers to school related activities such as swimming lessons and school tours.  We would greatly appreciate your support.
